Roman scrubbing up for the summer

09 August 2011

Steam rises from Chesters’ bathhouse as Roman scrubs up for Summer!

The PR team at GR has been busy working with English Heritage to promote its packed programme of spectacular events and activities taking place at Castles, Priories, Roman Forts and Country Houses across the North East and Cumbria this summer.

And, just this week, steam was spotted rising from the bath houses of Chesters Roman Fort for the first time in thousands of years. A centurion soldier (who looks quite familiar!) was seen cleaning off the dirt from years spent serving along the Roman frontier in preparation for activities taking place at Housesteads, Chesters and Birdoswald Roman Forts.

English Heritage will be playing host to a Legion of soldiers this summer, kicking off at Housesteads with ‘Children’s Roman Army’ (Sat 6 & Sun 7 Aug). Brave junior soldiers will be invited to earn their place in the Legion under the watchful eye of a real-life Centurion. If this is not enough for your little soldiers, ‘Time Travellers Go... Roman’ events will take place at Chesters Roman Fort, throughout the summer (Sat 23 July – Mon 29 Aug).

For breathtaking aerial displays from revered Birds of Prey, visitors should head to the ‘Roman Falconry’ event at Chesters (Sat 13 & Sun 14 Aug) to discover how these birds were used by the ancient Romans.

Visitors to Birdoswald Roman Fort can look forward to celebrating the best of Roman science, technology and even make-up at the incredible ‘Roman Inventions’ event (Sat 20 & Sun 21 Aug). During this exciting weekend at Birdoswald, there will also be an opportunity for visitors to uncover the secrets of days gone by at the ‘Time Travellers Go... Archaeology’ activities – a chance for some hands on fun and dressing up.

And, if all that wasn’t enough! Centurion soldiers and the Roman Cavalry will also seize control of Corbridge Roman Town, transforming it into a battle arena for a special gladiatorial extravaganza.
